Performances are now underway for the Holmdel Theatre Company’s latest main stage production, “Life Is a Dream” and tickets are going fast. The play, which runs through April 14, was written in 1635 by Spanish dramatist Pedro Calderon de la Barca, considered one of the finest playwrights of world literature. Adapted by Diane Dowling and directed by Laurie Devino and Chris Szczerbienski, “Life Is a Dream” is the story of Segismundo, Prince of Poland, who has been imprisoned in a tower by his own father, King Basilio, after a dire prophecy that the prince would bring disaster to the country and death to the king. The king briefly frees his son, but when the prince goes on a rampage, he is imprisoned again and persuaded that it was all a dream.
Cast members include Di Shawn Gandy as Basilio, Anthony Aversano as Clotaldo, Jessica Freeland as Rosaura, Aaron Ratzan as Clarion, Peter Newes as Segismundo, Jesse Luciani as Astolfo, and Felicia Russell as Estrella, plus ensemble members Lisa Catalfamo, Emily Gendelman, and Melissa Lee.
“Life Is a Dream” is being staged at the Duncan Smith Theater, located at 36 Crawfords Corner Road in Holmdel, NJ – a charming, intimate venue housed in a 125-year-old barn that has been transformed into a modern, air-conditioned black box performance space with seating for 99 guests at each show.
