Although summer 2018 doesn’t officially begin until June 21, many people consider Memorial Day weekend to be the unofficial kickoff to the season. Undoubtedly, the holiday offers all kinds of rest, relaxation, fun, and festivities – but first and foremost, it is important to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day. Observed each year on the last Monday of May, it is meant to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military (not to be confused with Veterans Day in November, which honors all those who have and who continue to serve). Memorial Day first began in the years after the Civil War and was originally known as Decoration Day; it became an official federal holiday in 1971.
In communities throughout the nation, moving ceremonies are held to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice – and, in doing so, made it possible for all the rest of us to live in freedom. There are less somber celebrations, as well, with parades and festivals where we can revel in American pride. Here are details available at press time about just some of the Memorial Day events that are planned in our area, including those where you can bring along a lawn chair or blanket for a front row seat of your own – and remember those on the front lines.
