Part of the healing process after the loss of a loved one is learning to laugh again and enjoy the simple joys of life. And no one knows that better than the volunteers at Stephy’s Place, a non-profit organization based in Red Bank that provides free support groups to those who have suffered a loss and helps them to move forward with their lives. Established by a team of area residents who lost loved ones of their own on 9/11, Stephy’s Place offers a supportive environment where those in need are surrounded by care and compassion from others who understand firsthand the journey through grief. Attendees at Stephy’s Place meetings also form close bonds and develop deep friendships, often enjoying social events together.
Stephy’s Place recently hosted its first fundraiser of the year, dubbed Color Your Way to Calm – Coloring for Grownups. The uniquely creative event was inspired by the adult coloring trend that is currently making headlines as a source of soothing entertainment and relaxation. The inaugural event, held on Thursday, March 7, was hugely successful, with nearly 150 guests turning out at the Church of the Nativity Parish Center in Fair Haven, NJ. For a donation of $25, each participant was provided with art supplies, coloring pages, coffee and tea, and a delectable assortment of desserts. Attendees were invited to bring their own food and drinks, which were festively enjoyed at tables filled with friends, family, and fellow Stephy’s Place supporters.
Throughout the evening, guests also had the opportunity to purchase special raffle butterflies – the symbol of new life – for a half dozen surprise prize drawings. The refreshments were generously donated by local businesses, including Cups and Cakes in Rumson, Daisy Chocolates, LLC in Monmouth Beach, Red Bank Chocolate Shoppe in Red Bank, J&M Bakery in Middletown, and Alfonso’s Pastry Shoppe in Red Bank. At the end of the evening, the enthusiastic artists were invited to leave behind their colorful sheets, to be donated to JBJ Soul Kitchen in Red Bank, where they could be used as very special placemats for dinner patrons.
Coming up next is the Second Annual Comedy for a Cause to Benefit Stephy’s Place, to be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the Brookdale Community College Performing Arts Center, located at 765 Newman Springs Road in Lincroft, NJ. This year’s performers will be Erica Spera, Anthony DeVito, Jon Fisch, and Charles McBee who have entertained audiences with their hilarious appearances on Gotham Comedy Live, NY Comedy Club, Caroline’s, CBS The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Comedy Central. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. The admission price of $65 per person includes the show ticket and dessert, plus a cash bar. Last year’s successful Comedy for a Cause event proved that laughter is, indeed, the best medicine and this year’s rendition is sure to sell out. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.stephysplace.org.
All proceeds from both events go to support the free services that are offered at Stephy’s Place, located at 210 West Front Street, Suite 209, Red Bank, NJ. For more information, call 732-614-1142 or email info@StephysPlace.org.
